Stitching Our Stories: The Asian Perspective

Stitching Our Stories is a new exhibition exploring identity, craft, and creative legacy within the Asian diaspora. Organized by the student nonprofit Shown & Scene, it will debut as a pop-up presentation during the Claremont Art Walk this September, running from September 3 through September 6, 2026, at the Claremont Heritage Ginger Elliott Exhibition Center in the historic Garner House.

Stitching Our Stories was conceived to close the gap between generations of artists. The exhibition brings together established professionals and emerging student talent, weaving their work into a single narrative thread. Visitors will encounter a short documentary film composed of original interviews with professional artists across a range of disciplines, screened alongside their pieces and personal reflections. Displayed beside them will be the winning works from our student art competition, giving young, rising artists a rare platform next to the mentors who inspire them.

At its core, this exhibition is about representation and mentorship. It aims to allow young Asian American artists to see their own circumstances, backgrounds, and ambitions reflected in the professionals who came before them, and to leave inspired rather than intimidated by the road ahead. By placing student work in direct conversation with established art, the show demonstrates that artistic legacy is not inherited passively but built collectively, one story and one stitch at a time.
